CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

________________________

She can’t be dead. She can’t be dead.

This repeats on a loop as I watch a group of paramedics get to work on Marly. She’s already had two epinephrine shots, and now someone is performing CPR on her. The defibrillator panels are out and ready to go. It looks like they’re filming a scene from Chicago Fire in my dining room. The only thing missing is Taylor Kinney. Now that would have been a scene I’d rather enjoy. But this?

Jenna slips a protective arm around my shoulders. “Well, this turned out to be quite the dinner party,” she whispers in my ear.

“Really, Jenna? Not the time.” I shake my head at her.

“I’m sorry. I was trying to make you feel better. Marly is in good hands, Luc. Look—” She points to Marly, who seems to have regained consciousness. “Her eyes are open.”

Oh, thank God. So I didn’t kill our dinner guest. But Bree almost did. Was this merely some freak coincidence? Bree couldn’t possibly have known that Marly is allergic to pine nuts. Could she? As far as I know, they had never met before tonight. And even if they had, why would Bree want to poison our guest?

The only thing I’m certain of at this moment is that there should not have been pine nuts in that sauce.

But there were. One look at Marly’s bloated, splotchy face and—clearly, there were.

“I’m going to talk to Bree,” I decide, slipping out of Jenna’s embrace. “I totally get it if you want to split. I’ll text you later once things calm down here.”

Jenna flashes a sympathetic smile. “Go ahead. I completely understand. Love you, Luc.”

“Love you more.”

I start walking to Bree’s room, but a hand on my arm stops me. I flip around to find Andrew glaring. For a moment, I wonder if he’s choking again—because his face is that same deep purple color. “Where do you think you’re going, Lucinda?”

Nope, he’s not choking. Just angry.

“I’m going to talk to Bree. I don’t understand how pine nuts wound up in that sauce. I don’t even keep pine nuts in the cupboard in the event Chad and Marly come over. So where did they come from, Andrew?”

“I eat pine nuts, Lucinda. They may have been mine. Have you considered the possibility that Bree grabbed them because she thought pine nuts would fare better in a pesto sauce than walnuts? I’m sure this is all just some unfortunate accident.”

Could he be right? Were the pine nuts in our cupboard all along?

No, no, no. Absolutely not.

“No Andrew, I deep cleaned the cupboards the other day. I’m one hundred percent certain there were no pine nuts in there.”

Andrew huffs and throws his hands in the air. “Okay, so let me get this straight… Are you suggesting Bree somehow knew about Marly’s allergy and intentionally grabbed a hidden stash of pine nuts to—what—poison her? Do you have any idea how utterly ridiculous that sounds? Are you seriously about to go accuse our nanny of attempted
